What is a Low Carb Diet?

The word “carb” is short for carbohydrate. Therefore, when you hear the word, low carb or carbohydrate it simply means a food consisting of relatively few carbohydrates.

But, to be more precise, a single carb is one in a large group of organic compounds that occur in both foods and living tissues. In fact, a carbohydrate is one of three macronutrients that we need in our diet. However, if you have taken organic chemistry, you know that carbohydrates are the basic building blocks of everything including proteins and fats.

Therefore, it is very easy to eat more carbohydrates than our body really needs. Then, the body converts and stores any excess carbs into fats. And as a result, we gain weight which can result in health problems like diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure.

Fortunately, a low carb diet allows the body to break down fats to fuel the body. Therefore, while a low carb diet is low in sugars, starches, and certain fibers, it must be high in healthy proteins and healthy fats. This results in maintaining a healthy weight.

The 8 Health Benefits

Benefits of Low Carb Diet? Eating a low carb diet is certainly not all about getting and keeping a lean body. Losing weight is just one of the added perks to being on a low carb diet! There are also many health benefits to eating a low carb diet. So, what are the benefits of low carb diet?

1. Quick Weight Loss

To be clear, sugar is a carbohydrate. However, it sometimes called by its chemical name glucose. Nevertheless, sugar is the body’s primary source of energy. When the sugars we consume do not provide the body with enough energy, it taps into our body’s reserved energy supply! Fat is stored energy.

Therefore, when you start a low carb diet, your body will break down the excess fat in your body and use it for fuel. In this way, you will lose weight.

2. Improved Cognitive Function

Research indicates that excess sugar can increase cravings, anxiety, and fatigue. Sugar is addictive. Therefore, the more we eat it, the more we sometimes crave it.

3. Reduced Sugar Cravings

As stated, sugar can be addictive. Therefore, as you train yourself to eat a low carb diet, you will crave less sugar. You will learn that one of the great things about being on a low carb diet is that you can eat more healthy fats. In fact, you can eat quite a bit more and still lose weight. I personally enjoy eating a variety of low carb nuts.

4. Lower Risk of Heart Disease

Excess weight is a major cause of heart disease in the United States. Therefore, when you lose weight, you can lower your risk for heart disease and high-blood pressure. However, there are other factors that must be considered and used in moderation as well like table salts.

5. Reduced Risk for Certain Types of Cancers

As a retired oncology professional, one of the first things that I learned in school is that cancers love sugar. In fact, when a person is diagnosed with a cancer, the oncologist will often order a special PET Scan. What makes this scan unique is that a sugar molecule is added to the contrast medium being injected into the individual before the scan. This is done because cancers love sugar. As a result, anywhere the cancer is located, will become highlighted on the PET Image.

Side Note: In its simplest form, a carb is a sugar. The body converts sugar to glucose to be used for energy.

6. Minimize Risk of Candida Overgrowth

Candida is an overgrowth of yeast in the body. This fungus enjoys feasting on high carb diets. And as a result, you can end up with any number of random health conditions that can be very difficult to treat. In fact, the best long-term treatment for a person with candida yeast overgrowth is a low carb diet.

7. Reduce Growth of Bad Bacteria

Once candida starts taking over your intestines, it crowds out the good bacteria that is needed to keep the body healthy. As a result, your intestinal tract stops breaking down foods properly. Then, it opens the way for bad bacteria to proliferate along with the yeast overgrowth. Both of which feed off sugar. As you can imagine, things can get complicated quickly. The person may end up with new food allergies, fatigue, brain fogginess, bad breath, body odor, and a leaky gut. At this point, a low carb diet is essential. However, additional methods of intervention are required.

8. Improved Blood Glucose Levels

The body uses insulin to transport glucose throughout the body. When a person consumes high amounts of sugar or carbs, it causes the pancreas to work hard and produce more insulin. If a person has a weak pancreas or if the pancreas is abused, insulin production becomes inadequate. Therefore, a low carb diet will reduce the level of sugar in the blood. Thereby improving your blood glucose level and reducing the workload on your pancreas.

The low carb diet process can be quite fun! Especially if you are also interested in the health benefits of low carb diet.

Popular Foods to Eat

Popular Low Carb Diet Foods. My personal low carb diet foods include eating healthy meats, dark green vegetables, a variety of raw nuts, and drinking mostly water. When grocery shopping, I try to stay along the perimeter. Think about it. Most grocery stores place their fresh fruits, vegetables, eggs, and meats along the perimeter of the grocery stores. Once you start going down the aisles, you encounter all the processed high-carb foods.

However, there are a few low carb diet foods that can be found on the inner aisle of a grocery store. But there are not many. So, make a list and get what you need. Popular low carb diet foods that are typically down an aisle are pickles, mayo, mustard, apple cider vinegar, nuts, gelatin, and oils.

Depending on your overall goal, there are some additional low carb diet foods that can be purchased. Although not recommended, some “sugar-free” items provide low carb diet foods as well. However, do not be fooled, some of these items are not low carb and artificial sugars are not healthy.

Again, depending on your main reasons for starting a low carb diet, there are some relatively “low carb” diet foods available. For example, a granola bar with 9g of carbs is lower in carbs than a candy bar with 30 carbs.

One last thing – check the serving size! At times, items may appear to be good low carb diet foods, then when you check the serving size it is miniscule. Meaning, you will likely eat far more than what they consider to be a serving size. The Low Carb Diet Life site will keep you up to date on some of the best low carb diet foods.
